Gastronomy in Gran Canaria
The gastronomy of Gran Canaria combines the food of aboriginal Canarians with traditional Spanish recipes and Latin American and African influences. It is distinguised by simple dishes and it is based on a range of quality local products like vegetables, fruits and fish. Undoubtedly one of the most popular dishes is potatoes with mojo and gofio, which is cornflour, wheat or rye toasted and used to thicken soups or stews and it can also be used to make desserts. The wines and cheeses of the island are also very popular as well as other typical dishes such as Sancocho or Ropa Vieja and desserts like Bienmesabe and spirits as Ron Miel. Fish is one of the strengths of Canarian food and a great variety of local fish themselves, like Vieja, Grouper or Cherme.
